Most of the information has been collected in the WWW. This list of decoders is not meant to be complete, especially decoders for motors with field coils have not been included. Some decoder classes have been moved to separate lists:

At the bottom of the page there are references to 'do it yourself' decoders.

Some actual sizes do not match the manufacturers data. As I could not measure most of the decoders myself, the table contains manufacturers data.

Permanent total decoder current [A]
S = Short circuit protection
O = Overcurrent protection
t = thermal protection
None of this protective measures can in all cases prevent the decoder from being damaged or destroied. If the corresponding letter is given in the column for the motor current the protection covers only this output.
Motor: Permanent / Peak current [A] at motor output
"-f-" = Function only decoder without motor control
"-f-/A" = Function only decoder may be controlled via accessory addresses.
Features:
1 = 128 speed steps
All decoder support 28 speed steps; all but those from NCE 14 speed steps.
All Lenz decoders may be operated with 27 speed steps using internal averaging.
A =Asymmetrical Signal detection. Locomotive may be stopped with diodes at the track compatible to a proposal for the NMRA RPs.
All decoders with an "A" support 128 speed steps.
a =same as "A" but no support of 128 speed steps.
4 =4-digit addresses (see also "B")
B =NMRA Bi-Directional Communication = Lenz RailCom, i.e. feedback during operation.
b =Prepared for Bi-directional Communication, corresponding software may be uploaded by the manufacture or user.
All decoders with a "B" or "b" support long (4-digit) adresses
D =TCS decoders: Dither, NCE decoders from version 3.5: Torque Compensation.
Both apply extra low fequency pulses to compensate for the torque loss due to the high frequency PWM. They are different schemes to do this and how pulse power is reduced at higher speeds.
H =High frequency PWM for coreless motors like Faulhaber
L =Load compensation (= back EMF or speed stabilization)
R ="Rangiergang" = half speed + supressed accelleration and decellation delay.
r ="Rangiergang", supressed accelleration and decellation delay only
S =Sound
Meanwhile there are Decoders with interated sound function from many manufacturers with different memory size, dynamic range, sampling rate and number of channels. The different features are beyond the scope of this table. For more information please use the links provided.
s =Limited sound capabilities
U =Update of the software may be done by the user. Not all Decoders support this from the beginning. Zimo started in Sept. 2004, CT-Elektronik with version 26.
u =Update of the software can be done at the manufacturer.
